These ships were built in America during the war and were fast and graceful vessels in service throughout the 50's and I was on several of them. They had brilliant turbine engines, but the boilers that supplied the steam to them often gave trouble, thus I spent six weeks in Hamburg and a month in Monte Video plus another six weeks in Port of Spain, Trinidad. All great 'sailor towns; so I was grateful for the bum boilers as tankers had a very quick turn around and you were not even allowed ashore in some areas, especially the dreaded Persian Gulf. To be able to spend so much time in such good ports was a real bonus, thanks to the cranky boilers needing repairs which required the ship to put into ports not scheduled .
